Clinical Focus:

Research Focus/Interests: The Ma’s lab focus on two topics: 1) Structural and functional study of macromolecular machines important for cellular processes and pathways. 2) Cilia/Flagella biology. The Ma’s lab is interested in mammalian cilia/flagella, in particular those whose disorder leads to ciliopathies such as chronic respiratory diseases, renal anomalies and infertility. The lab employs multi-disciplinary in vitro and in vivo approaches including structural biology, biochemical, biophysical, genetic, and cell biology tools to investigate the detailed molecular assembly of mammalian cilia/flagella, the regulation mechanism of motility and the underlying mechanism of cilia biogenesis, ultimately provide clues for developing targeted therapeutics strategies for human ciliopathies.

Biography

Prof. Ma did his Ph.D. training at Tsinghua University from 2012 to 2017 during which he explored the initiating mechanism of autophagy. He was a postdoctoral researcher at Washington University in Saint Louis, where he determined the high-resolution structure of cilia. After that, he joined the Department of Histology and Embryology in Tongji Medical College of Huazhong University of Science and Technology as professor since 2021.
