Clinical Focus:

Research Focus/Interests: We previously work on tau and Fyn molecules, two key molecules in Alzheimer's disease (AD), and revealed a novel role of Fyn in regulating local synthesis of tau at somatodendritic compartment in the neuron. Our finding exquisitely demonstrates for the first time that, extracellular amyloid-beta can directly cause intracellular tau accumulation via local protein translation. We are particularly interested in how protein translation is regulated by tau and involved in neurodegeneration, as well as the regulatory function of Fyn. In addition, another protein tyrosine kinase Pyk2, encoded by an AD-risk gene PTK2B, has been focused on in our lab. Pyk2 is engaged in many Ca2+-dependent neuronal processes. We aim to explore their physiological role and pathological functions in AD pathologenesis.

Biography

Dr Chuanzhou (Joe) Li is currently Associate Professor at Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST). He studied life science and technology at Wuhan University, China (2003-2007), where he earned his Ph.D. in cell biology (2007-2012). After working on retinal neurovascular degeneration, he pursued his postdoctoral research in Australia at Queensland brain institute (QBI) in the University of Queensland, where he focused on understanding physiological (and pathological) brain function in Alzheimer's disease (AD) with the mentorship of Professor Jürgen Götz who is the Foundation Chair of Dementia Research and Director of the Centre for Ageing Dementia Research (CADR) at QBI. In early 2018, he joined School of Basic Medicine at HUST and continued his interest in understanding the role of tau and amyloid-beta in AD and related dementias.
