On November 28th, the opening ceremony of the first International Symposium on Cardiopulmonary Science kicks off at the Academic Hall of Tongji Medical College of Huazhong University of Science and Technology.
Prof. Jianguo Chen, the Deputy Director of the Academic Board of Huazhong University of Science and Technology and to give an opening address. He first extended a warm welcome to all the guests coming from afar and expressed heartfelt thanks to all the experts for their long-term support for the development of HUST. He mentioned that as the incidence of cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases remains high, Huazhong University of Science and Technology has signed an international cooperation agreement with Goethe University in 2023 as part of its efforts to advance the basic research of cardiopulmonary science and contribute to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cardiopulmonary diseases, thus ultimately improving public health. The agreement makes it clear that the School of Basic Medicine of Tongji Medical College of Huazhong University of Science and Technology agrees to build the "Sino-German Laboratory of Cardiopulmonary Science" with Goethe University and the Cardio-Pulmonary Institute Cluster of Excellence (CPI). At a time when Sino-German Laboratory of Cardiopulmonary Science (CPS) is established for one year, it is of great necessity for the School of Basic Medicine to organize such an academic gathering to mark the first anniversary of this international joint research center. It is hoped to pool Chinese and German educational and medical resources, form an international top research team, and carry out joint research. By doing so, HUST seeks to solve the common concerns of all mankind over cardiopulmonary diseases, cultivate outstanding talents, and build the university into a leading role in the global cardiopulmonary research.
Prof. Ingrid Fleming spoke highly of HUST for its outstanding performance in scientific research and talent training. She wished a great success for the upcoming three-day conference and hoped to hear more about different ideas for the clinical diagnosis and treatment of cardiopulmonary disease. Prof. Anbing Shi, Dean of the School of Basic Medicine, introduced the background, cooperation foundation and future plans of CPS.
The opening ceremony was followed by a lecture given by Prof. Thomas Braun, Member of the National Academy of Sciences, Member of the Academy of Europe, Full Professor of the University of Giessen and Director of the Max Planck Institute for Heart and Lung Research. Prof. Braun introduced the findings of his team in heart regeneration over the past two decades.
on November 28th-29th, over 30 outstanding experts and scholars in China and beyond with Prof. Ingrid Fleming and Prof. Leo Kurian from Goethe University, Prof. Thomas Braun and Prof. Mario Looso from the Max Planck Institute for Heart and Lung Research, Prof. Ralph Schermuly from the University of Giessen, and Prof. Sofia Iris Bimpli from Heidelberg University included are invited to share the cutting-edge advances and latest findings in the field of cardiopulmonary disease. The International Symposium on Cardiopulmonary Science will cover a wide range of topics, including basic research, clinical diagnosis and treatment of heart failure, pulmonary hypertension, vascular injury, and other cardiopulmonary diseases.
On the afternoon of November 29th, Prof. Jiong Hu guided six foreign experts to pay an on-site visit to Junshan International Campus where they learned about the background, functions, departments, and surrounding environment of this newly-built campus. Ms. Xiaoyun Wei, Vice Director of the Construction Office, gave a tour of the campus, introducing the teaching buildings, library, dormitory, apartment for foreign experts and outdoor sports field.
