Prof. Xinglong Zheng from The University of Kansas visits BMS

On September 19th, Dr. Xinglong Zheng, Russell J. Eilers MD Endowed Professor and Department Chair of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at The University of Kansas Medical Center, paid a visit to the School of Basic Medicine, Tongji Medical College, HUST. Prof. Jianguo Chen, Vice President of HUST, Prof. Anbing Shi, Dean of BMS, Prof. Chao Fang and Associate Prof. Xulin Xu met with Prof. Xinglong Zheng.

In the afternoon, Jianguo Chen and Anbing Shi had an informal meeting with Prof. Zheng respectively at the meeting room 2 of the Administrative Building and the meeting room of the Department of Pharmacology of BMS.

Jianguo Chen warmly welcomed Prof. Zheng who was an alumnus of Tongji Medical College. Prof. Chen kindly asked about Prof. Zheng's work experience after he graduated and introduced to him the development of Tongji Medical College over the years. Prof. Chen mentioned that Tongji Medical College attaches great importance to international exchanges and offers its faculty and students access to the latest academic progress globally and cross-cultural communication. In this afternoon there were four lectures given by international scholars at the same time, which indeed created strong international academic atmosphere for people on campus. The university has formulated and implemented Global Development Strategy 2030, incorporating international cooperation and exchanges into teaching practices and scientific research. By doing so, it aims to build itself into a university where world-class scholars aspire to teach and top students choose to study.

Prof. Zheng expressed his gratitude for the warm reception. He said he felt at home when he stepped on the campus almost four decades after his graduation. Tongji Medical College has changed a lot with better campus environment and upgraded facilities. Moreover, it has made remarkable development in discipline construction, talent training and scientific research, earning growing significance and good reputation in the world stage. As an overseas alumnus, he felt so proud of the stable development of alma mater.

Prof. Shi introduced to Prof. Zheng the faculty team, achievements in scientific research, the running mode of labs and other basic situation of the School of Basic Medicine. They had an in-depth discussion over the cultivation of young researchers, sustainable research methods and evaluation system.

Based on his career in scientific research, prof. Zheng concluded that young researchers must be patient, focused on one field and overcome all difficulties to tackle practical problems. Prof. Shi agreed with him and they reached a consensus that researchers shouldn't be short-sighted. Instead of being a follower, researchers need to have a long-term vision and aim to make original innovation. It is of great significance for young researchers to participate in international cooperation and exchanges, learning about the frontier of science worldwide, sharing own findings and gaining the trust and recognition of global peers.

After the meeting, prof. Zheng, accompanied by prof. Chao Fang, went to the academic hall of Tongji Medical College where he gave a lecture on thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura.
