Prof. Chris Tselepis from University of Birmingham paid a visit to the School of Basic Medicine

On July, 4, 2023, Prof. Chris Tselepis, Head of the School of Biomedical Sciences of University of Birmingham, visited Tongji Medical College, and was given a guided tour of several experimental platforms of the School of Basic Medicine, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology.

At 3pm, Prof. Tselepis visited the Tumor Epigenetics Laboratory at the Building 2 of the School of Basic Medicine under the guidance of Lidong Sun, professor at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Prof. Sun introduced to Prof. Tselepis the basic situation of the lab, his research interests and research findings achived by the lab. They were interested in each other's research directions and expressed the willingness to find the potential of future research cooperation. Prof. Sun and Prof. Tselepis exchanged ideas about the specific measures of both universities to improve the research ability of undergraduates. Prof. Tselepis spoke highly of HUST "Undergraduate Innovation Project" and admired the enthusiasm of HUST undergraduates to actively participate in scientific research during weekends and summer vacations.

Next, Prof. Tselepis came to Cellular & Molecular Biology Center, one of three branch centers of National Demonstration Center for Experimental Basic Medical Education. Prof. Ping YUAN, Deputy Director of the Center, introduced the size and devices of affiliated labs, and experimental courses the Center offering. Prof. Tselepis observed the operation of DNA electrophoresis spotting by students and thought it was great that undergraduates have the chance to participate in cell culture. Prof. Tselepis was impressed by the labs that are tidy and well-managed, and he took the initiative to introduce similar labs in the University of Birmingham.

After that, Huixia Zhang from the Department of Anatomy guided prof. Tselepis through the Museum of Human Anatomy where they got a chance to watch a collection of more than 1000 human specimens, involving embryonic development, the nine major systems of the human body, human plasticized specimens and other aspects. Chris was amazed by the Jiangling ancient corpse which dates back more than 2000 years and has a well-preserved skeleton.

At the end of this trip, Prof. Tselepis visited the lab on the second floor of the Morphological Building and labs of Kinesiology Center, one of three branch centers of National Demonstration Center for Experimental Basic Medical Education where Prof. Henghui Cheng and Prof. Ping WU introduced related information respectively. Prof. Cheng introduced the microscopy teaching tasks that the lab undertakes, and showed the use of the interactive microscopy system and its application scenarios. Prof. Tselepis used the microscope to observe the pathology sections and learned more about the teaching content. Prof. Wu elaborated on the specific purposes of 4 laboratories of the Kinesiology Center and had an in-depth exchange with Prof. Tselepis on the similarities and differences between the medical students training system in China and UK.

It’s learned that Prof. Chris Tselepis was invited to participate in Tongji Summer School and will teach the course named “A Tour of the Gastrointestinal Tract” from July 3 to July 7, 2023.
