On April 8, 2022, the 25th Tongji Forum on Pharmacology was held by the Department of Pharmacology, School of Basic Medicine, Tongji Medical College. Chao FANG, professor at the Department of Pharmacology, presided over this forum and invited Dr. Arnold Lining Ju from the University of Sydney to make an online academic report entitled Biomechanical Thrombosis: The Dark Side of the Force and Dawn of Cardiovascular Mechanomedicine.
Recent years have witnessed a growing number of cutting-edge researches revealing that external mechanical stimulation has significant effects on the fate of cells, tissues and individuals. In his report, Dr. Arnold Lining Ju elaborated on his researches on the regulation of platelet activation and thrombosis by hemodynamic microenvironment. Participants present actively interacted with Dr. Arnold Lining Ju after he finished the thought-provoking speech. They had a lively discussion on the application of biomechanical chip models to such thrombotic diseases as tumor thrombosis, microcirculatory thrombosis and restenosis after stent implantation. Prof. Fang and Dr. Arnold Lining Ju reached a consensus that both of them may have closer cooperation going forward. At a time when the world is still plagued by Covid-19, such online events give our faculty and students access to the latest findings from the outside.
Dr. Arnold Lining Ju is an ARC DECRA fellow (2019-2022) at the newly launched School of Biomedical Engineering and Heart Research Institute (HRI) at the University of Sydney, and started up a biomedical engineering group in March, 2020. This Heart Foundation Future Leader recipient is on the 2021 list of Innovators Under 35 selected by MIT Technology Review, which recognizes him as the best of the rising stars from around the globe who are leveraging emerging technology to make our future brighter. Dr Ju received his Bachelor's degree from Peking University in 2008 and was awarded PhD in Biomedical Engineering in 2013 at the Georgia Institute of Technology and Emory University, USA. His supervisor is biomechanics expert Prof. Cheng ZHU, and Prof. Larry McIntire, an academician of American National Academy of Engineering. From 2014-2019, Dr. Ju conducted postdoctoral research at Monash University and University of Sydney, Australia, under the supervision of Professor Shaun Jackson who is an internationally-recognized expert in thrombotic disease and antiplatelet drug development. Dr. Ju has been committed to solving cardiovascular biomechanics at the single molecule level using mechanical and physics knowledge and engineering techniques. His expertise covers biomechanics, haemorheology and cardiovascular engineering.
