Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology grows out of Biochemistry Teaching and Research Office that was founded in 1932 by Zhiyan LIANG, a well-known biochemist in China. In 1984, several teachers were selected to set up Molecular Biology Laboratory of School of Basic Medicine. In 2001, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology was formed by merging Biochemistry Teaching and Research Office and Molecular Biology Laboratory. It began to enroll postgraduate students in 1956, and was authorized to confer doctoral degrees in 1996 and approved as a postdoctoral station in 2001. Moreover, the department is the chairman unit of The Hubei Province Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
