Established in 1954, Department of Pathophysiology of School of Basic Medicine, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, was authorized to confer master's degree in 1981 and doctoral degree in 1983, and was approved to enroll postdoctoral fellows in 1994. The department set up Pulmonary Disease Laboratory of Ministry of Health in 1992 and was approved as a provincial key discipline in 1994. In 2004, it established Hubei Provincial Key Laboratory of Neurological Diseases, and was approved by Ministry of Education to establish Changjiang Scholars professorship that took charge of the Key Laboratory and "985 Project" Center of Neurological Diseases. It was approved as a national key discipline in 2007 and set up Key Laboratory of Neurological Diseases of Ministry of Education. It received the honor of National Excellent Course in 2004 and National Bilingual Demonstration Course in 2007. The course giver was awarded the title of National Teaching Master in 2007, and in 2009, it was recognized as a national excellent teaching team. Its Key Laboratory of Neurological Diseases smoothly passed the inspection of Ministry of Education in 2011. Currently, it is the vice chairman unit of the International Association of Pathophysiology and chairman unit of Hubei Association of Pathophysiology. Over fifty years' exploration enables the department to identify its research focus on neurology, respiration and inflammation where they have made great progress and contributed a lot to the development of pathophysiology in China.
